APR is a measurement that captures the total cost of a loan over one year, with all fees and interest included, allowing you to make an apples-to-apples comparison between different loans. So the lower the APR on a loan, the better. And the APRs on payday loans are nearly as high as they can go, with rates between 300 and 400 percent—and sometimes much higher.

The term signature loan is often interchanged with personal loan. Some people also call it loan of good faith as lender banks on your good faith to pay the loan and nothing more. Regardless, a signature loan is an unsecured loan that typically has so few qualification requirements that all you need to qualify is your signature and the promise that you’ll repay the loan. A signature loan allows you to borrow a larger amount of money than a payday loan and you can pay it back over a longer loan term. You can then use the loan for any purpose such as celebrating your anniversary, going on vacation, funding education or consolidating your debt.

In 2014 several firms were reprimanded and required to pay compensation for illegal practices; Wonga.com for using letters untruthfully purporting to be from solicitors to demand payment—a formal police investigation for fraud was being considered in 2014[61]—and Cash Genie, owned by multinational EZCorp, for a string of problems with the way it had imposed charges and collected money from borrowers who were in arrears.[62]
“I am a Florida consumer protection attorney who has 29 years experience,” consumer rights expert Donald E. Peterson explained. “I have probably consulted with a couple thousand people about their debts including potential bankruptcy clients who were defendants in collection lawsuits and consumers who were seeking a lawyer to represent them because they were being sued by a creditor or debt collector. NONE of them were ever sued by a payday lender. Not one.”
Unfortunately, not all of these payday lenders are reputable. The easiest way to tell the difference between a safe payday loan and a scam is to look for businesses that are properly licensed. All licensed payday lenders must follow strict laws passed by your state and the federal government. Since they have to follow these rules, you know you have more protections from fraud.
A lot of people use credit cards to pay for these unexpected expenses. However, relying on credit cards can lead to a spiral of high-interest debt. In general it’s a good idea to avoid using your credit cards unless you can afford to pay off the balance the same month. Using a safe payday loan is often a better option that can help you get back on your feet without forcing you into a never-ending cycle of debt. Before you accept an offer, though, you need to learn how to identify safe loans that match your needs.

The major drawback of a payday loan is the fact it can be expensive – often extremely expensive. Usually the payback amount is usually 1.1 to 1.5 times the amount that is borrowed. These factor rates don’t include any additional fees the merchant cash advance funder may charge the borrower. Even more, these advances are paid back anywhere from 4 – 18 months, with many immediate financing company’s providing advances of 6 months or less. By having to payback the loan so quickly, it can strain a company’s  cash flow. Also straining cash flow is the fact that payments are being paid on a daily basis (although there are some funding companies that will accept weekly payments).
Customer Notice: Payday Loans are typically for two-to four-week terms (up to six months in IL). Some borrowers, however, use Payday Loans for several months, which can be expensive. Payday Loans (also referred to as Payday Advances, Cash Advances, Deferred Deposit Transactions/Loans) and high-interest loans should be used for short-term financial needs only and not as a long-term financial solution. Customers with credit difficulties should seek credit counseling before entering into any loan transaction. See State Center for specific information and requirements.
